CHELTENHAM MID-WEEK TOURNAMENT, July 10-12
Liz & Rupert Webb
played in the over 50s handicap tournament at Cheltenham. The lawns
were good, the hoops were wide, the sun was shining and so were they.
While Rupert did not have a good tournament, Liz faired rather better.
She won her first game against C.A. Secretary, Klim Seabright and then
beat Veronica McClements. Next she saw off
David Mundy a very good player on 1 before coming up against the
Cheltenham 'bandit', Tony Forbes (11 h'cap). He only started playing
last
May and, since keeping a card, had never lost a match. He soon put paid
to her good run and knocked her out of the main event. Next was Don
Clay, Roy Meads and, finally, Hugh Popplewell,
all of whom succumbed to her mallet.
As there were now five of them in contention for the Egyptian, she was
absolutely deighted to win the trophy ...... then came away without her
mallet!!!
