BEGINNERS' COURSE BRINGS IN NEW MEMBERS

This year’s beginners’ course, which finished on Thursday, 14th June, was less well attended than in recent years. However, out of a total of 18 students on the course, 10 have been recruited to the club (8 full-playing, 1 junior and 1 non-playing) to bolster our membership from 85 playing members to 93. This percentage compares favourably to previous years when approximately one-third have joined and has brought in over £1700 towards club funds.

In the past it has been abundantly apparent that an understanding and acceptance of the 4-ball break has not been grasped sufficiently well by course attendees and this year an attempt was made to improve the level of knowledge. The standard CA-designed Grade I (Beginners) course was re-organised into segments that built on to each other by way of a series of exercises performed by the students. The different croquet strokes were introduced to this series to gradually build up the 4-ball break.

While some areas of the course need to be improved upon, the experiment was considered worthwhile. However, the success of any course is dependent upon the club members who give their time up to run the course. They were too many to name individually but a big ‘thank you’ goes to everyone involved.
