ROLL OF HONOUR
APRIL
After sterling work by John Larmouth and his helpers the lawns were looking great for the start of the season  on 1st. April. It did not take John Wilkinson long to get going when he won the  first Wednesday comp . of the year (he also won the first 2005 comp.). There were further Wednesday wins to come in April for David Tunbridge, Paul Widger and Lorna Frost. Paul also set the scene for what was to come from him later in the season by winning the first Swinging Sunday.

Swinging Sunday
Ian Lines did not take long to kick-start his season when he went to Heaton Park on successive week-ends to share the Lancs International Golf tournament and win the Neil Williams Millenium trophy. David Maugham also started in a winning way  with success in the Pendle Handicap (giving away 131 bisques in 12 games) and the Southport Advanced (with Ian Lines runner-up).

The big club game of the month was the Bowdon Saints and Bowdon Canons local derby. Saints won the match 4-2 with Ian Lines and Barry Keen winning the doubles and singles wins for Ian and Barry and Mike Steer. Cannons points were earned by Frank Moir and Lorna Frost (doubles ) and Frank in his singles.
The other match in April saw Griffins lose their opening match 4-2 to Bury with Rupert Webb our only singles win taking his match by +1t.

MAY
The month of May started with the Handicap Weekend , which, as normal, was excellently managed by Lorna Frost. Seven out of the eight quarter-finalists were Bowdon players and when Sylvia Steer beat Lorna +17 and Mike Steer won +1t against Steve Reynolds in the semis it narrowed down to an all-Steer final. Mike was the victor winning the, as expected, close encounter by +7.

May was a very bad time for Bowdon teams with seven matches being played and only one win. All three national cup matches were lost at home, Bristol 4-3 in the Inter-club and Nottingham twice, 4-3 in the Mary Rose and 5-2 in the Longman Cup.  Bowdon St. Mary's lost their first league game 6-0 against Crake Valley on a miserable day in the Lakes and followed it up with a 4-2 home defeat to Bury. The Griffins drew 3-3 at home to Chester and the only team success of the month being Firs impressive 4-2 win at Southport Palace , with good wins for Barry Keen and Peter Higgins in the doubles and captain Charles Harding and Barry in the singles.

The Wednesday competition continued to go from strength to strength, often with turnouts of over 25% of the club's membership and showing an ever increasing standard of play. The first Wednesday in May saw Steve Lewis  win what was to be the first of  a string of impressive scores (including another three Mars bars). Other Wednesday winners in May were Sue Cooper, Rupert Webb/Jean Teare (joint winners), Carol Steinberg and a second win of the season for John Wilkinson.

The important task of gaining new members was addressed in May by the start of  Ken Cooper's Beginners' Course. Ken's impressive coaching skills were matched by a keen turnout of club members in support and the club consequently ended up with about 9 new members.

The Beginners Course

The Cheshire team, including Colin Irwin, Brian Storey, David Maugham, Ken Cooper and Ian Lines finished third in the Counties Championship held on the south coast.

Ian Lines did 6 triple-peels and a sextuple (apart from the peg-out!) at the Cheltenham Advanced tournament and finished as runner-up.

JUNE
June started with the Bowdon Advanced Competition which went with the form book with David Maugham winning the event and Ian Lines runner-up; Brian Storey won the Egyptian.

The June Advanced Tournament

It was a mixed month for the Bowdon league teams. In the NW Advanced League Saints were well beaten 6-0 at home by Crake Valley.
In the Handicap League St. Mary's started off with a fine win at Southport with captain Rupert Webb leading from the front and winning his doubles with Janice Moir and his singles match. There were also wins from Ros Pimlott and Sue Cooper. Later in the month, though, St. Mary's met Firs in the big local derby at Bowdon and went down 4-2.  St. Mary's also drew 3-3 at home with Southport Victoria . This match was notable for Jane Wilkinson making her team debut and helping Ken Cooper to a doubles win in the morning session. Firs' other match was a 6-0 defeat at Pendle & Craven.
In an exciting match against Pendle, Griffins (in the Midweek League) drew 3-3 after being 2-0 down at lunch with wins for John Saxby, Jenny Dennis and Sue Cooper.
The Short team started their season off with an  8-8 draw at Fylde to gain, what was to be, a vital
point at the end of the season.

Steve Lewis took another Mars Bar in the Wednesday comp. with other winners in June being Ken Cooper, John Saxby and John Leckie/Chris Lewis (joint winners).  John Saxby's win was with a record points total of 98 (meaning he pegged out in all three games and had only six hoops scored against him).
).
John Saxby wins the Mars Bar with Janice Moir (2nd), Richard Griffiths (3rd) and Steve Lewis (4th)

The traditional Barbecue took place at the end of June and was, as usual, a great success, with many thanks going to Colin Irwin and his band of helpers.

Away from Bowdon there were some brilliant performances by Bowdon members. David Maugham went to Oregon and came third in an International Invitational Event and brought home $500 in prize money. Ian Lines won both halves of the draw to win the Pendle Advanced . Also victorious, in 'B' level tournaments were Andrew Winn (Edgbaston) , Mark Lloydd (Bristol), Sylvia Steer (Sidmouth) and Richard Griffiths at Parkstone.

Also in June David Maugham and Ian Lines (England) and Keith Aiton and Chris Dent (Scotland) were picked to play in the Home Internationals at Heaton Park.

JULY
Wild Wednesday, the pinnacle of the Wednesday Competition, was held in July and won by Chris Lewis with Lorna Frost and Cecil Davies close behind. The other July Wednesday winners were Ros Pimlott and Janet Guthrie.

Another mixed month for the Bowdon league teams. In the Advanced League Saints lost 5-4 at Southport and won away 4-2 at Bury whilst Canons lost their only match of the month, 4-2 on the new lawns at Pendle. Pendle wasn't any better for St. Mary's in the Handicap League where they suffered their second 6-0 drubbing of the season. St. Mary's other match ended in a 3-3 draw at home to Bury Caesars. Firs had a good win (4-2) at Southport Victoria but also went down 6-0 at home to Fylde. The Short team carried on in the form that would eventually see them as champions with a 10-6 win at Llanfairfechan and Griffins managed a third successive 3-3 draw, this time with Chester at Bowdon.

The Northerns Week was moved from its traditional spot in August to July and right into the middle of the heatwave. The temperature in the sun was measured at 110oF. during one match on Lawn 1. Bowdon players had a good week with only David Turner of Tyneside taking away a trophy - the Handicap singles. There were wins for Brian Storey ('A' Class), Dennis Graham (B), John Larmouth (C), Alan Linton/Ian Lines (Advanced Doubles) and Ian Lines/John Larmouth (Handicap Doubles).

Margaret Russell won the Swinging Sunday event and Roy Edwards, now a far-country member, achieved his lifetime ambition of winning the CA Gold Award by doing his first ever triple peel at the age of 79.

Bowdon was well represented at the British Open with David Maugham, Keith Aiton, Ian Lines and Steve Lewis all taking part. The event was won by Robert Fulford with Reg Bamford runner-up.

AUGUST
August proved to be a much better month for the Bowdon league teams, only losing one match out of seven played. There was only one match in the NW Advanced League, a 3-3 draw for Canons at Southport. Two good wins for Firs against the two Bury teams ( 4-2 v. Caesars and 5-1 against Peelers ) in the Handicap saw them climb up the table. St. Mary's carried on with their disappointing season by losing by 6-0 (for the third time in the year) to Fylde away. The Short team marched on, this time comprehensively seeing off Bury 12-4 at home and Chester , by the same score, away. The Griffins made it 4 out of 4 Bowdon victories against Bury in the month with a convincing 5-1 away win.

The main event of the month  was the North of England Championships . There was a strong field with 7 of the world's top 50 taking part and the 8 Bowdon members in the field of 24 all applied themselves well, with Keith Aiton the eventual winner.

In the Wednesday Comp . two wins for Chris Lewis at the start of the month gave him a hat-trick. Chris was now really starting to put some pressure on Steve Lewis who responded on the third Wednesday of the month by taking the Mars Bar himself. The other winner in the month was John Leckie.

A very good month away from Bowdon for its members with two wins by David Maugham at Tyneside and  the Ranelagh Cup at Roehampton (for the second year running). Martin Granger Brown won the Advanced Tournament at Edgbaston for the second year running. John Wastell won the 'B' at Southport with Richard Griffiths as runner-up and Dennis Graham taking the Plate event.

Bowdon's own version of the 'Counties' was won by Steve Lewis' Cheshire team.

SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER

The Bowdon league teams had a mixed time during September and October - winning 5 and losing 3 of their matches. In the Advanced League the Saints finished their season with a 5-1 home win over Pendle & Craven and ened up 3rd in the league. Canons lost in home matches against Bury (0-6) and Crake Valley (2-4) to finish bottom of the league. A good win, though, in the last match for Frank Moir to beat Crake's Dave Nick (113th in the world). In the Handicap League Chester were the visitors twice, beating Firs 5-1 but losing to St. Mary's 4-2 in their only home win of the season. There was a tremendous finish in this match with Mike Steer coming from peg & 2 v. peg & peg to beat Janet Davies. Firs finished up 4th and St. Mary's 8th.

The Short team completed a great season with two home wins against Southport (9-7) and Pendle & Craven (12-4) to win the title and the Griffins finished as runners-up in the Midweek League after a fine 4-2 win at Pendle & Craven .

In the Wednesday Competition there were two wins for Sue Cooper, one each for Jane Wilkinson, Jean Teare and John Wilkinson (to edge him into third place overall). There was one more win for Steve Lewis, to confirm him as the overall winner, with Chris Lewis finishing in second place.

Steve Lewis
On the individual front Jenny Dennis and David Cotton did well to finish in joint third at the All England Handicap Regional Finals at Pendle . There were two more wins for Ian Lines - the Southport Advanced and the Heaton Park Challenge . Keith Aiton won the Southerns. and with David Maugham represented Great Britain in the international against Ireland. Back at Bowdon Margaret Russell showed great promise in winning the Novices Trophy , beating Patrick Cheyne into second place.

The big national events were the group of tournaments known as the Eights. There was mixed success for Bowdon members in these with the pick of the bunch being David Maugham's sceond place in the main event, the President's Cup, losing out to Robert Fulford and a mention for Ian Lines who was runner-up in the Chairman's Salver.

All club championships were completed except for the final of the 14-point Handicap including Colin Irwin winning  the A Class for the twelth time. Click here for a list of all winners.
