BREAKING NEWS ARCHIVE 05-06/11/05 - RICHARD GRIFFITHS' INTERNATIONAL DEBUT

INTERNATIONAL HONOURS FOR RICHARD GRIFFITHS
Jersey-Ireland International, Carrickmines, Sat 5- Sun 6 Nov 2005.

This weekend (5-6 Nov) Richard Griffiths will be in Ireland on a very late-season fixture playing at Carrickmines as part of the team for Jersey (where he was born) in the Jersey/Ireland International. Sarah Burrow phoned recently to invite him onto the team which includes herself and her son Matt Burrow (no 14 in the world rankings). Richard was surprised and honoured to be invited to join the team. This will be his first international match. Richard says "I think they must have found nobody at the bottom of the barrel, so they came and looked underneath". If he does OK there may be an update on the result...........

...........Richard was promoted to captain of the Jersey team, as Matthew Burrow had just had a tooth extraction, and didn’t want to do speeches at the end. Sarah Burrow completed a strong team for Jersey. The Irish team (Simon Williams, Capt., Patsy Fitzgerald and Russell Harris) were also very strong, with Russell currently showing a remarkable 82% wins on the world rankings! Overall, it was a close-run thing, with thirteen games played and only one game in it, the players being very evenly matched. Everyone experienced both wins and losses. There was a good crop of triple peels, in six out of the thirteen games (3 to Matthew, 2 to Simon, 1 to Sarah). The weather was mostly sunny, and the Jersey team enjoyed splendid hospitality from the host side.

Result: Ireland won by just one game
